Langstaff History:The community of Langstaff Corners grew at the intersection of what is now Yonge Street and Highway 7, after John Langstaff took over his father-in-law's property at the northeast corner around 1808. After the War of 1812, Langstaff operated a general store, a blacksmith shop, some woodworking shops and a post office which opened in 1870. By the mid 1800's there was a tollhouse and gate at the intersection for travellers using Yonge Street. Today, the name, Langstaff, is, perhaps, the most well-known name of any Richmond Hill community or resident, past or present.
James Langstaff, one of John's sons was one of the first doctors born and trained in Ontario. He began his Richmond Hill practice in 1849. His son, Rolph Langstaff and Rolph's wife Lillian, also, became well-known doctors in Richmond Hill, as did their son, Doctor James Rolph Langstaff after 1926. As this family practiced medicine in Richmond Hill for over a century it is appropriate that one wing of York Central Hospital is named the Langstaff Wing. Doctor James Langstaff became chief of staff of the hospital in 1963.
German Mills Creek
Today, the community of Langstaff lies on either side of Highway 7, with the southern part in Thornhill. The northern Richmond Hill community of Langstaff can be considered those neighbourhoods north of Highway 7 between Yonge Street and Bayview Avenue and south of Sixteenth Avenue.
Langstaff Real Estate: In time, the most talked about part of the community was that known as the Langstaff Jail Farm. This 632 acre property was turned into a minimum security prison by the City of Toronto, which owned the property since 1911, and needed to ease the strain on the Don Jail. The inmates worked the farm raising crops and some livestock. The buildings, which were vacant from 1959, were, finally, demolished in 1981 to make way for the provincial hydro lines. In 1996, the Town approved a plan that encompassed commercial, industrial and residential uses on over 400 acres of the property.

Langstaff Real Estate: Condominiums
Today, there are highrise condominiums near Yonge Street, as well as townhomes, semi-detached and detached homes that satisfy the needs of buyers and sellers, alike. It seems fitting that since businesses sprang up at Langstaff Corners in the early days, there is, now, a proliferation of commercial ventures and businesses on the north side of Highway 7 between Yonge Street and Bayview Avenue. There is Silver City, the Langstaff GO Station, Viva Blue, and Home Depot. To the east there is elite-sounding, Bayview Glen Business Park with Loblaw, Walmart and Canadian Tire. Even the residential areas invoke the feeling of prestige with names like Bayview Glen off Yonge Street and Bayview Hunt Club on Bayview Avenue north of Bantry Avenue.
There are no infill homes south of Bantry Avenue where the subdivisions are newer, but infill development still occurs to some degree at the southwest section of Sixteenth Avenue and Bayview Avenue. New homes, here, are being constructed with larger square footage than, previously, seen just 20 years ago, with most of them selling in the one million to 1.5 million dollar price range.
With all of the opportunities for entertainment, shopping, home ownership and amenities such as Langstaff Community Centre and German Mills Trail, it is easy to understand why Langstaff is such an attractive place to live and work.
